Buddhist Insights is a non-profit organization connecting monastics with lay-people.
By using technology to build community and engage audiences in meaningful learning
experiences of the Dhamma, Buddhist Insights aims to create a modern and solid
support system for the Western Buddhist community.
WHAT WE DO:
We partner with monasteries and temples, as well as lay Dhamma practitioners and
secular groups throughout the West, to create a powerful network of monastics and lay
communities that mutually support each other.
Monks and nuns from various Buddhist traditions are invited to come to urban centers
to offer the gift of the Dhamma for designated short periods of times, and therefore
enabled to teach in both secular and non-secular settings while building solid
relationships with lay communities, without needing to give up the pursuit of living a
The Buddhist monastic order is the oldest institution in the world that is still operating
according to its traditional bylaws. As an order composed of individuals who have
dedicated their lives to studying and practicing the Buddha’s teachings, it is a valuable
source of highly experienced and knowledgeable Dhamma teachers. Buddhist Insights’
long-term goal is to preserve this institution in the West by familiarizing the public with
it, while helping it stay relevant in today’s modernized society.
HOW WE OPERATE
Complying with ancient Buddhist tradition, Buddhist Insights operates entirely on
donations (dāna), through the generosity of its supporters, attendees, and grassroots
WHO WE ARE:
Buddhist Insights is the brainchild of Suddhāso Bhikkhu and Giovanna Maselli.
An American Theravāda monk, Suddhāso Bhikkhu (Bhante Suddhāso) has studied
under the guidance of some of the most important names in Western Buddhism like
Ajahn Pasanno, Ajahn Amaro, Ajahn Viradhammo, and Bhante Gunaratana. Ordained
at Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery in California, he was first trained in the Thai Forest
Tradition, then moved on to live at various Sri-Lankan monasteries in both rural and
urban environments. A dedicated teacher, Suddhāso has taught to people of all
different ages and walks of life, as well as college students of universities like Harvard,
University of Mary Washington, and Suffolk County Community College.
Giovanna Maselli is a creative consultant with over a decade of experience in art
direction and content creation for both print and digital editorial platforms. The
founder of creative collective Rockaway Summer in Rockaway Beach, NYC, she
has previously worked as a researcher for Trendstop, a trend forecasting agency
in London, as a Features Editor at ELLE Magazine’s fashion desk in Milan, and as a
freelance Journalist for publications like L’Uomo VOGUE, Vogue.it, ELLE Italy, The
Guardian, Flair, D La Repubblica, among many others.
